As every other area of the face, a too large or too small chin especially when it is out of balance with the nose can cause facial cosmetic problems.
The chin can be augmented or reduced by a surgical procedure.
How is the Surgery Performed?
The patient undergoes the surgery under general anesthesia.
There are several surgical options depending on the type of correction. Considering this, incision placement is chosen: an incision can be made in the natural crease under the chin or inside the mouth.
Two approaches can be employed for chin augmentation: the chin can be augmented either with an implant, which is placed over the bone of the lower jaw and attached to the bone with special screws, or by performing osteotomies (cutting the bone) in the lower jaw of the chin area resulting in the changed profile projection of the chin.
During the chin reduction procedure, the chin bone is cut (osteotomies), and part of the lower jaw in the chin area is removed.
